You Bought Your First HOME… What Do You Do Now?
Here is a list of the 5 things new homeowners should do first:
Clean from top to bottom. Start with the kitchen. Clean all your cabinets and put shelf liners in before you unpack. Clean your refrigerator, microwave and oven. Next move on to the bathrooms, scrub your shower and toilets and get new toilet seats and shower curtains if need be. Floors and windows are last after you are done unpacking.
CHANGE THE LOCKS
It is always a good idea to change your locks. You don’t want to go to bed and think to yourself who else has a key to my house? Anyone could have a key to your house like a contractor, babysitter, house sitter, friends of previous owners-who knows! You can hire a locksmith or do it yourself. Great tip: Make sure you have one universal key for all the locks, it will make your life much easier!
CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS
There are two places to change your address and you will want to do it sooner than later. The post office and the DMV. Both can be done online or by simply filling out a form. Google your state and find out the process for the DMV-every state will have different requirements. Also, contact your banking and credit card institutions as well. Send all your family and friends a moving announcement with your new address too!
You will probably be making a lot of new changes to your new HOME so it is always a good idea to take before and after pictures. You will love looking back one day at all the changes you have made. It is also a good idea to take pictures once you are completely moved in for your home owners insurance. You will want an inventory of everything in the home and pictures are worth a thousand words!
